Hugo and Kime take the honours at Jeep Msinsi Multisport Series
Sunday 20th July 2008

Conditions were ideal as a perfect winter’s day greeted over five hundred athletes for the first event of the Jeep Msinsi Multisport Series at Albert Falls Dam yesterday.
Fresh off a successful campaign in the United States and Europe, Stellenbosch’s Dan Hugo set the pace over the Long Course event comprising a 5km trail run, 20km mountain bike and 5km paddle to break the tape just under one hour and thirty minutes. Hot on his heels were team mates Andrew Birkett and Lance Kime who placed second and third respectively just two seconds apart. It is encouraging to see the juniors placing high on the overall ranks and not far off the pace of Hugo, who currently leads the US Xterra Series. Craig Carter-Brown edged in to fourth place on the paddle ahead of Jean-Paul van der Linde, to conclude a classy top five.
The women’s race was a close tussle between Ironman athlete Helen Buley and talented junior Robyn Kime. Kime’s paddling strength saw her open the lead during the final 5km paddling leg and she went on to win in a time of one hour, forty-three minutes and 23 seconds. Jenny Reynolds placed third behind Buley.
The New Balance Multicross event continued to grow in popularity attracting a field of one hundred and fifty athletes for the 5km trail run, 20km mountain bike and 2.5km trail run. The individual category was won by Sean Jones and Ursula Morris respectively while Team Thompson’s were the first team home.
Murray Starr (U16) and Jordan Peek (U12) were worthy winners of the short course event, which is aimed at the youngsters and novices. The schools prize for the first three U12 athletes representing one school, was won by Hillcrest Primary.
The second event in the Jeep Msinsi Multisport Series takes place at Shongweni Dam on Sunday 17th August. All details and entries on www.maxcluer.com
